A fire that has ravaged a laundry business could spell the end for the company, according to its owner.

Jay Patel, who owns Horizon laundry, in Advent Way, saw the business he has run for 30 years go up in flames for the second time in a year last night.

The fire destroyed the factory and damaged several other businesses on the Eley Industrial Estate, in Upper Edmonton.

Mr Patel told the Enfield Independent: “This could put us out of business, we will have to wait on what the insurance say. If they can give us finance to buy linen and supply to the customers then we may have a chance.

“We've done 30 years work and now this. We might be finished now. On the way here I was hoping and praying.”

Fire crews battled the blaze from 9pm until 1.11am this morning.

Mr Patel said he knows the feeling all too well after seeing a similar fire damage his company last year.

He said: “We had this a year ago but I don’t think it was the same cause. First time it was combustion but this time I really cannot tell.”

However, the fire has infuriated many neighbouring businesses who claim there have been more than two fires.

Savas Kulle, who owns a clothes processing company close to the business, said: “We cannot work at all, this is absolutely ridiculous. Our stock is soaking wet and this has happened more than once at their factory.

“We have lost a lot of business; it is ridiculous how many times our businesses have been stopped because of this.

“They have said this was the second time but we have counted more.”

Nuri Ahmed, who owned a detergent manufacturing company, said he could not get any of his orders in because of the fire.

In response to their concerns, Mr Patel said: “What can I say to them, I don’t want it to happen. We have 24-hour shift to man what’s happening. We had a man here who was in the loo when the fire alarm went off and by the time he came out the fire was too big.

“I understand their anger. We are a thriving business with great contract, we wanted to be here for the next ten years and we are not doing this deliberately.”

Mr Patel could not put a time on how long the factory would take to repair.

The company was established in 1985 and started in Kentish Town before moving to the site in Advent Way in 2012.

Forensic teams are investigating the blaze. The cause of the fire is not yet known.
