Barclays bank will close one of its branches in Enfield due to lack of custom.

The bank has announced that its branch in Lancaster Road, Enfield, is set to close next year.

A statement from the bank, which opened the Lancaster Road branch on January 26, 1969, says custom has fallen by 38 per cent.

A Barclays spokeswoman said: “The way customers undertake their banking is changing as people increasingly use online, telephone and mobile devices. In response to this change in customer behaviour we must evolve our business to meet their needs.

“Our records show that the use of our North Enfield branch has declined by 38 per cent since 2008 and that 75 per cent of customers are already using other branches nearby.

“Our colleagues at Barclays North Enfield branch have been consulted about the changes and will transfer to other local branches.

“In addition to the option of online, telephone and mobile banking, customers can undertake everyday transactions at the local Post Office at 159 Lancaster Road, Enfield.

“We hope the range of alternatives including digital banking, nearby branches and Post Office access will help to ease the transition for our customers in North Enfield and if any customers have any concerns we would recommend they speak to a member of staff.”

For those living around Lancaster Road, the closest branch will now be in Enfield Town.
