Council chiefs have slammed the latest cuts in funding from the government.

Another round of spending cuts announced by Communities Secretary Eric Pickles will leave Enfield Borough Council with a cut in funding of 4.2 per cent, over two times the national average of 1.8 per cent.

Announcing the settlement in the House of Commons yesterday, local government minister Kris Hopkins described the settlement as “fair for all parts of the country, whether north or south, urban or rural”.

Most of the authority’s funding comes from central government, with about a quarter raised through council tax.

Leader of the Council Doug Taylor said: “Unfortunately the financial settlement is as bad as we anticipated.  Year after year funding to Enfield has been cut and this means we will have really difficult decisions to make on cutting vital services this year and next.

“The Autumn statement has also indicated significant future cuts to public services and the strain on local government is becoming intolerable.

“Central Government needs to wake up to the impact their decisions will have on children’s and adults’ services, the cleanliness of our streets, quality of open spaces and other public amenities.”
