Edmonton Green station is moving up in the world after new lifts were installed.

The £2million lifts can fit a maximum of 16 people and have been paid for by Network Rail, Greater Anglia and the Department for Transport.

Network Rail area director Andy Boyle said: “Improving access is an important part of building a bigger and better railway and the new lifts at Edmonton Green will make life much easier for people using the station. Passengers with reduced mobility or travelling with small children or heavy luggage should reap the biggest benefits.”

Mike Stubbs, TfL’s director of London Overground, said: “It is vital that step-free access to London’s rail networks continues to improve and we are delighted that Network Rail and Abellio Greater Anglia have completed this step-free project with Enfield Council.

“From May 31, 2015, we take over operation of the West Anglia services, which will join London Overground. From the first day we start running the London Overground service through Edmonton Green, we will staff stations throughout the period that trains are operating and anyone needing assistance from staff will be able to ‘turn-up-and-go’, with no requirement to book.

“Customers can also look forward to refurbishment at the stations, with new trains introduced from 2018.”

Cllr Chris Bond, cabinet member for environment and community safety, added: “Edmonton Green is by far the busiest station in Enfield, used by an estimated three million passengers a year. However, the fact that the platforms could only be accessed by climbing over 40 stairs meant that they could not be used by many members of the community.

“These new lifts now make the station, and the surrounding area, truly accessible to everyone, regardless of their mobility, and I am delighted that Enfield Council played such a major role in this project."
