Cycle training will be offered at schools as part of the Cycle Enfield scheme.

The training will take place over the coming months at West Grove, Chesterfield and Houndsfield schools, and is part of the £30million cycling scheme that is set to bring in more cycle lanes across the borough.

Enfield Borough Council will also be running more ‘Dr Bike’ sessions and ‘build-a-bike’ courses for secondary schools.

After the council received the money from Transport for London’s 'mini-Holland' scheme in March 2014, the first set of plans for new cycle routes will be revealed to the public next month.

The scheme so far has polarised opinions in Enfield Town and Palmers Green, with some shopkeepers fearing a loss of parking space and loss of trade.

Councillor Chris Bond, who is responsible for environment and community safety, said: "We want to get people out of their cars and onto their bikes, and these cycle training courses will give people the confidence and the ability to do that.

"These sessions are about giving people the skills to take advantage of the £30 million Cycle Enfield project we are embarking on over the coming years, it's an exciting time for cycling in this borough and we want as many people as possible to come on the journey with us."
