Enfield Council's leader says it is for the national Labour Party to decide the fate of a councillor who has been suspended after a fraud conviction.

Lower Edmonton representative Nesimi Erbil was convicted of fraud last September after he was found to be driving with a fake “all London” green taxi licence – when he was only entitled to drive in his cab in Enfield, Haringey, Waltham Forest and Hackney.

He was fined £580 and given eight points on his licence, as well as a four-week suspended prison sentence.

At the council's meeting last night,Conservative group leader Cllr Terry Neville tabled an urgent question to council leader Cllr Doug Taylor, calling for Cllr Erbil's resignation.

He also said: “On learning of those convictions, what action did he [Cllr Taylor] take to remove councillor Erbil from, in particular, the licensing committee where in the ordinary nature of the work of that committee, Councillor Erbil, a convicted fraudster, would be sitting in judgement on the licensing of others?”

In his response, which was given as a written answer, Cllr Taylor said Cllr Erbil had been removed from his position on the licensing panel and the national party was dealing with the matter.

Cllr Taylor said: “Such a referral took place promptly after the member informed me of the matter on January 21.

“On January 22 the national party decided to issue an administrative suspension and the councillor has been removed from all committees he sits on.

“It is now for the national party to take the action it sees fit and it is not a matter of local group determination."
