An Edmonton MP saw the progress of a flood alleviation scheme that could save 2,500 homes from flooding.

The Salmon Brook scheme at Montagu Recreation Ground, in Montagu Road, is designed to store water after heavy rainfall.

Almost 200 homes in the area flooded in 2000. Work by the Environment Agency began in June 2013.

Edmonton MP Andy Love toured the recreation ground to see how the scheme is progressing.

He said: “It’s great to see the flood alleviation work along Salmons Brook progressing well, and no doubt extremely reassuring to the 2,500 plus homes that will be protected from flooding as a result.  No one would want a repeat of the devastating floods of October 2000.

“The works have been a long time coming and there is much more still to be done but we’re beginning to see the scheme take shape and it’s a bonus that the area in question will be maximised for use by local residents when it’s all completed.”

Caroline Douglass, area manager for Hertfordshire and North London, who hosted the event, said  “It was a pleasure to be able to show Mr Love and Cllr Abdullahi around the site so they could see the progress made since June 2013. They could see for themselves the high quality flood walls and new engineering solutions we have already constructed The Montagu Recreation Ground will be restored fully by the end of the project  and will have a number of improvements so that the public will be able to enjoy it to the full.

“When completed the scheme itself will deliver a much reduced risk of flooding to many homes and businesses and will be the largest urban flood alleviation scheme that we have delivered in north London in recent years.”
