A councillor has resigned from her role at Enfield Borough Council.

Rohini Simbodyal, who represents Jubilee ward for Labour and is the authority's cabinet member for culture, sport, youth and public health, had been a councillor since 2009 but has now decided to step down.

A letter sent on March 27 to councillors by assistant director of legal and governance services Asmat Hussain states that the former councillor resigned with “immediate effect”.

It reads: “There is now a vacancy in the office of Councillor for Jubilee Ward which will be filled on Thursday, May 7.”

A Labour group spokesman said: "Work commitments and a desire to pursue new opportunities have led her to take this decision.

"Rohini was the cabinet member for culture, sport, youth and public health, and served Jubilee ward for six years. Rohini has made a significant contribution to improve the lives of people in Enfield and particularly in Jubilee ward.

"We would like to thank her for her contribution to Enfield and the council and our best wishes go with her.

The former councillor added: "It has been a privilege to serve as a cabinet member and councillor in Enfield. I am very grateful to all those who have supported me over the last six years. I look forward to continuing to support the Labour Party as member and improving lives through new opportunities."

An Enfield Council spokesman said: “Enfield Council can confirm Cllr Rohini Simbodyal has resigned as a councillor, a by-election will take place for the vacant position in Jubilee ward on Thursday May 7.”
