A man who was shot dead by police after allegedly wielding a firearm in a block of flats has been named.

James Fox, 43, was killed in Picardy House, Cedar Road, Enfield after allegedly making threats to the police.

This is the third death in under a week following the death of Jourdaine John-Baptiste, in Ayley Croft, last week and a 35-year-old man in Bounds Green on Monday.

Armed police stormed the sixth floor of the building after receiving reports a man was armed with a gun and threatening to shoot someone.

However, friend of Mr Fox, Christian Miles, told the Enfield Independent that the incident was “out of character".

He said: “He was a very quiet bloke who has had a difficult time and he doesn’t seem like someone who would have gun, it is very out of character.

“He was a quiet sort of guy. He has had a rough time of late since his brother Adam passed away eight years ago.”

Mr Miles described Mr Fox as a “very talented artist” and claimed “he is not the sort of guy to hurt anyone".

Neighbours were left stunned at the incident, which took place at around 11.50pm on Sunday.

Ilir Raci, a neighbour in the block of flats, said: “The noise was horrendous, I could hear shouting all night. It was hard to hear what was being said but it sounded threatening.

“Then I saw 20 police breaking into the block of flats, it was carnage. It sounded like firecrackers in there, everyone is in shock.”

The stunned neighbour also said he heard two gunshots inside the flat on the sixth floor.

Another neighbour, Tyson Osman, who lives on the eighth floor, said: “The whole block was awake after the gun shots, I saw the police armed as they came into the block, it was terrifying.

“I saw him every now and then but he did not speak to me. He seemed like a man who kept himself to himself.”

The incident has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission, the watchdog which investigates all deaths involving police officers.

Elsewhere, a man has been charged with murder after a 35-year-old was stabbed to death in a street fight.

Bernardas Petreikis, of Shrewsbury Road, Bounds Green, was charged on Monday, August 31.

The 35-year-old was due to appear at Highbury Corner Magistrates' Court yesterday.

Emergency services were called to a home in Shrewsbury Road, Bounds Green, at around 2am this morning after a fight broke out.

The man died on his way to hospital. Next of kin have been informed.
