Schoolchildren taking part in a London-wide volunteering scheme have enjoyed helping the homeless so much they call it the “best trip ever” according to their teacher.

Year Three pupils at St Andrews Primary School in Southgate took part in the Team London Young Ambassadors program this year which encourages children to volunteer in their area.

The primary school have teamed up with St Andrews Church to prepare the homeless shelter once a week. Every Wednesday for the past 12 weeks a group of seven and eight-year-old children from the school go down to the church and set up the shelter during the day ready for the guests in the evening.

This involves blowing up air beds, putting on sheets and duvet covers, and finally passing an inspection of their handiwork.

Teacher Rebecca Hickson said her pupils have loved the experience.

She said: “If inspection is passed the children receive the toothbrush for the bed. We have lots of fun and the children are learning so much about the world around them.

“As a C of E school we have strong connections with the church, and helping the homeless is always a good cause.

“It is quite hilarious to see the seven year olds dealing with the big bedsheets, but they enjoy it. It is great that we can share with the community what we are doing.

“It is just around the corner, but as the kids keep telling me, it is the best trip ever!”
