An elderly couple say they were “shocked” when over 60 kilograms of wood was dumped on their doorstep.

Chrysi and Christopher Jacob bought £1,511 worth of flooring from B&Q Enfield, and asked it be delivered into their Southgate home.

However, when it arrived last Tuesday (May 17), the delivery drivers instead dumped the solid wood on their driveway, and refused to take it inside even when asked.

Ms Jacob 72, and her husband, 70, had to carry all the materials into their home, despite their age, and Mr Jacob suffering heart problems and having to use a pacemaker.

She said: “We were shocked, B&Q say the materials have to be put where the customer asked but these men simply did not care.

“It took two hours in the rain for us to lug it all inside, it was terrible, if I knew this would happen I would never have ordered it.

“We phoned them up, but the person we spoke to was very rude, he just said ‘what do you want us to do?’”

Ms Jacob says eventually they spoke to the manager of the Enfield branch, who apologised and offered £150 compensation.

However she says it was more about the principle than the money, although the quick apology means she will consider shopping at B&Q again.

She said: “We are elderly, what would have happened if we had left it?

“I was more than ready to pay any younger people who walked past to help us get the stuff inside.

“My back and knees still hurt now, and I honestly thought my husband would have a heart attack.

“I still cannot believe what happened, all we wanted was it taking two steps inside the door.”

B&Q spokesperson Timothy Amoui said: “We were sorry to learn that on this occasion Mr and Mrs Jacob did not received the high quality of customer service we pride ourselves on.

"We apologised as soon as we were made aware of their complaint and as a gesture of goodwill arranged a reimbursement, which the customer has accepted.”
