A planning application for over 400 new homes has been praised by Enfield Council.

Developers Countryside have submitted the plans to be built on Avenue Road in Southgate, to replace the New Avenue Estate, with the existing blocks on Coverack Close, Beardow Grove, Oakwood Lodge and Shepcot House demolished to make way.

The £140m redevelopment would increase the number of homes from 171 to 412, with plans for a mix of apartments, maisonettes and houses, and also including a community centre and a pre-school nursery.

Countryside say all current council tenants will be given the option of being rehoused in the scheme if they choose.

Richard Cherry, chief executive at Countryside, said: “We have worked closely with the council and local community to design a scheme that not only significantly increases the number of homes, but also creates a much improved environment for residents and the wider community and we look forward to moving ahead with the delivery of new housing for the borough.”

Cllr Ahmet Oykener, cabinet member for housing and estate regeneration said: “This development not only replaces old housing and introduces many additional homes that will benefit the people of Enfield, but it also includes features that will make it a more enjoyable place to live in.

“I hope the planning committee receives the plans favourably.”
