GCSE results in Haringey have “bucked the national trend” with a 10 per cent rise in good grades.

Figures show the number of students gaining five or more A* to C grades, including English and Maths, is up to 64.6 per cent.

Across the UK the percentage of pupils getting A* to C scores in 2016 in English fell to 60 per cent and in Maths to 61 per cent – drops of eight and seven per cent respectively.

But in Haringey the number of students getting the best English marks rose to 74 per cent and in maths to 70 per cent – increases of nine and three per cent.

This means Haringey schools, on average, scored 14 per cent above the national average in English and nine per cent above in maths.

Elin Weston, cabinet member for children and families, said: “The rise is an incredible achievement by students and teaching staff in our borough.

“Our incredibly talented students have bucked the national trend with their hard work and have made us all extremely proud. I wish all of them well for the future.”

Among the best performing schools in the borough were Hornsey School for Girls where pupils achieved 500 A and A* grades; Fortismere, which saw 96 per cent of pupils taking English literature getting an A* to C, and Woodside High School, which saw a 30 per cent increase in grades.
