One of Enfield’s oldest pubs could be set for redevelopment.

The Fox, in Green Lanes, Palmers Green, could be set for a makeover after its owners, Star Pubs and Bars, said it is considering proposals and has appointed a property developer, Lateral.

A pub and hotel has stood on the site for hundreds of years, with first mention of the site recorded in 1862, and the current building being constructed in 1904.

Last year, the pub became the first in Enfield to be named an Asset of Community Value after an application by the Southgate Civic District Trust, which means it has added protection from development.

However, Milly Hutchinson of Star Pubs and Bars said: “I am pleased to let you know that we are is considering development proposals for the pub.

“We want to continue to operate in Palmers Green, and our development proposals will ensure that the original pub building is retained and refurbished, whilst providing us with the much needed opportunity to re-position the pub’s offer to ensure that The Fox continues to be a valued community pub, enjoyed by locals for years to come.

“We have appointed Lateral Property Group to help us work up suitable proposals for the property, and before anything is finalised, consultation with the council, local community and key stakeholders will take place.”

No planning proposals have yet been submitted to Enfield Council.

The news has gathered a mixed response on social media, with some saying they are pleased to see investment in the historic pub, others worried it could face an uncertain future.

Mark Beattie wrote on the Palmers Green Community Facebook page: “The pub just needs some money spending on it. It could thrive and bring some real value to the area if they made similar changes to the ones made to the Kings Head in Winchmore Hill”

Koula De Moura Castanheira said: “Wonderful news, it looks neglected, I remember when I was a very young woman it had life, now it looks lifeless, the whole area not just the pub.

“The whole of Palmers Green is a dump, never use to be like this, we need changes for the better.”

Efa McDermott added: “It would be such a shame to turn a pub that's been around since 1716 into more housing. Maybe they should give them some funding to do it up and keep a local landmark that's been around for hundreds of years.”
