An investigation has been launched after a woman died while waiting to be transferred to another hospital.

Koula Christou had a heart attack in Barnet Hospital in January, a few hours after having suffering intestinal bleeding.

The 53-year-old, from Enfield, had spent four weeks at the hospital.

She was scheduled for an endoscopy – but she was the last patient to be seen on the day.

After the bleed was confirmed at 3.45pm, doctors ordered more tests but these were not available at the Wellhouse Lane hospital after 5pm.

While Mrs Christou was waiting for a hospital transfer, she had a heart attack at around 7.30pm and was eventually taken to theatre at 9.15pm, where she died.

Speaking at a pre-inquest review, Andrew Walker, senior coroner for North London, ordered an investigation into radiology services at the hospital.

He will also investigate whether the surgical team at Barnet Hospital could have been involved earlier in the day to perform life-saving treatment.

The inquest will begin on October 31 at North London Coroners Court in Barnet and is scheduled for four days.

Emily Palmer, a clinical negligence solicitor acting on behalf of the family, said: “This is a deeply distressing and upsetting case for the family.

“It is hoped that the family’s questions regarding Koula’s sad death will be answered during the coronial process and help them come to terms with their loss.”

Barnet Hospital have been contacted for comment.
