Mauricio Pochettino admitted that his side lost concentration as they conceded after six seconds into the second half.

Spurs lost their third home game of the season to Newcastle United 2-1 after Emmanuel Adebayor gave Pochettino’s side the lead but were pegged back by two second half strikes.

The result meant that it was Tottenham’s worst start to a season since 2008/09 under Juande Ramos.

The current Spurs boss said: “We need to analyse the first half, it was very good, we deserved more than the one goal.

“It is difficult to explain how we started the second half, it was a stupid goal.

“It was a shock, all changed after this moment, six second before the stadium had good energy but after this moment our head had gone.”

Newcastle’s substitute Sammy Ameobi latched onto a Jack Colback pass catching Eric Dier and the rest of the Spurs defence out straight after the second half kickoff.

Ayoze Perez then scored his first Premier League goal for Newcastle to seal the three points.

The Spurs boss looked under pressure with just one Premier League win in seven and said that the team need to install a “winning mentality.”

He said: “It was a lack of concentration for us and we need to work on our mentality because it is not a physical or a tactical thing. It is our mentality and our challenge to improve.

“We need to be stronger like a team. We need to speak and create a different situation on the training ground. We need time to work in this area.”

Adebayor leapt highest to give Spurs the lead after 17 minutes and Pochettino felt that the first 45 minutes was the best his team had played this season.

He said: “Newcastle is a big team but when you analyse the game, after 45 minutes it is impossible to say we are going to concede a goal like that.

“I think it was the best 45 minutes we have played. It was a lack of concentration which made all the difference.”

Spurs now face Brighton in the Capital One Cup fourth round before travelling to Aston Villa next Sunday afternoon.
