Enfield Town completed a 3-1 win over Ryman Premier league leaders Margate last night but the match will be remembered for a different reason as Liam Hope became the club’s all-time leading scorer.

Hope netted the Towners’ third goal of the night to overtake Rudi Hall’s tally of 106 Enfield goals.

Midfielder Hall's previous record of 106 included 56 penalties and spanned 351 games. Hope, who joined the club five years ago, took 230 games, the vast majority of these as a striker, and has netted 34 penalties.

The other Enfield goals against Margate were scored by Nathan Livings and Ryan Doyle.

That victory, coupled with Saturday’s 1-0 success over AFC Hornchurch, has lifted the Towners to ninth in the table.

Enfield have slowly moved up the division since Quinton took over from George Borg at the end of August but he was particularly impressed with his side after the weekend victory.

He explained: “I am happy for the boys and it was a good win for us. Yes, we weren’t at our best but that’s because we had to change our style.

“We arrived and the grass was long and the pitch was bobbly, that made it difficult for us. They are a direct side and were up for a battle, we had to match them and did.

“We were excellent and I learnt a lot about the players. They were ready to fight and scrap for the points and we deserved to win.”

The crucial goal arrived in the first half, nine minutes before the interval. Jon Constant won possession in the Hornchurch half, advanced on goal and deftly lifted the ball over the hosts’ goalkeeper Sam Mott.

The Towners had only been beaten three times under Quinton. Avoiding relegation remains the club’s main aim for the season but Quinton is solely focusing on the upcoming fixtures.

“You’ve got to take it game by game. We’ve done well in the last couple of months and have had good results.

“Staying up and consolidating, a word I don’t like, our position in this league is the aim. We’ll keep focussing on the games and see what happens. I have confidence in the players’ ability and attitude.”

Enfield’s attention turns to the FA Trophy this week as they travel to Ryman Division One North side Dereham Town in the first qualifying round.

A victory would net the side £2,700 in prize money and Quinton knows how important a cup run can be to the club’s budget.

He said: “Going on a good run in the cup is always important for the club. It adds to the budget and also helps me with adding players to the squad.

“We don’t need to improve the squad, that’s not the right word but I would like to strengthen it and add some experience and a few goals.

“That will cost you a little bit more money which is why it is important we can get a good result on Saturday and hopefully continue to do well.”
