Enfield Town boss Bradley Quinton says he put a stop to talk of a surge up the league after the Towners beat Kingstonian 1-0 on Saturday to move up to tenth.

Victory over the K’s means Enfield are now five places and nine points outside the Isthmian Premier Division play-offs, though they boast three games in hand on several of the sides above them.

And, whilst Quinton has said there is no reason why his side can’t reach the play-offs, he wants his players to remain focused on maintaining their impressive run of form for now.

“One or two of the boys mentioned the fact we have got one, two or three games in hand on the teams above us, but I quickly put a full stop on that talk,” stated Quinton. “It is one game at a time and it is down to us – no-one else.

“As I keep saying, I really do believe someone is going to get hit for three, four or five sooner or later because we are creating so many chances at the moment,” he added.

Centre-back Mark Kirby got the game’s only goal in the 80th minute, but Quinton felt the final scoreline did not accurately reflect the quality of his side’s performance.

He said: “I was pleased with the way the boys started so sharply but they did not take their early chances. Corey Whitely set the tone with a strong tackle right in front of the dugout early on. It could have been three or four at half-time.

“Their goalkeeper made several saves but they only had one chance, which Nathan McDonald saved; apart from that they didn’t bother us at all. It was a late goal in a way but it had been coming.”

After seeing fixtures against Witham Town and Billericay Town postponed in the last fortnight, Saturday’s win over Kingstonian was the Towners’ first game in 11 days. However boss Quinton saw pros and cons to the extended break.

He explained: “The boys did really well. I was pleased with how hard they worked and the performance overall. It was a very good performance considering we have not played a league game since mid-October.

“Some people see it one way, some people see it the other. I was just a little bit worried that we might not come out the traps very quickly. There is nothing like playing games, but full credit to my staff for helping out with keeping everyone fit.”

Quinton added: “I was very pleased with the performance considering they beat us 5-2 at the start of the season and their manager came up to me and said how impressed he has been with us, which was very nice.”
