Tottenham Hotspur were reportedly willing to use Andros Townsend or Erik Lamela as bargaining tools yesterday as they chased Southampton's Victor Wanyama.

The Saints made it clear Wanyama was not for sale but the Evening Standard claims Spurs were ready to offer £20 million plus either of the two wingers to get their man.

It is believed that the 24-year-old midfielder was keen to link up with former Saints boss Mauricio Pochettino at White Hart Lane, but the St. Mary’s club stood firm on retaining the services of the former Celtic man.

Both Lamela and Townsend have struggled for Spurs of late, with the latter failing to make an appearance yet for Tottenham this campaign.

Wanyama made 38 appearances for Ronald Koeman’s Southampton side last season, scoring three goals.

Tottenham also failed yesterday in their pursuit of West Bromwich Albion striker Saido Berahino as their third and fourth bids for the England Under-21 forward were rejected.
