Enfield’s Ryan Poole will make his England senior debut after being selected for the first round of the 2017 CEV Volleyball European Championships.

The 17-year-old first represented England U20s in January in the U20 European Championship winning one out of the two games he featured in.

Fourteen of England’s best volleyball players will represent their country in the event held at the Time Sotra Arena in Norway.

Head coach Simon Loftus said: “The squad is well prepared, we’ve got a great dynamic and we’re all up for the challenge.

“It’s been some time since we competed on the national circuit so we’re looking to benchmark ourselves to see where are up to and how we perform.”

It is the first time an England national side has competed on an international senior level since their loss of funding after London 2012.

England are set to face Israel, Hungary and hosts Norway in a three-leg competition with the top team in their group automatically progressing to the second round.

Loftus said: “Our Olympians have been driving the standard of our training sessions up and there is an obvious difference now from when we first got together.

“We will lay the foundations of what will be the start of rebuilding the England team.”
