Enfield Town had a break from Ryman League Premier Division league action last weekend and took part in a friendly which saw them 1-0 winners over Thurrock at the QES.

Tom Collins scored the only goal of the game in what was a good test for the Enfield club after their drought ended midweek in a 4-2 win over Cheshunt in the Alan Turvey Trophy first round.

Dernell Wynter scored Town’s first hat-trick since Corey Whitely’s treble against Kingstonian last March which ended Town’s run of four consecutive games without a goal.

Town attacked from the off as Claudiu Vilcu’s shot over the bar after two minutes and three minutes later, the lively Harry Ottaway had a header saved by home keeper James May.

Tyler Campbell’s shot after 26 minutes was turned round by May, despite it lacking any real venom but a couple of minutes later, Town took the lead.

A free kick from Billy Crook was moved out to the right-hand side and a cross into the danger area was flicked on by Brad Quinton for Harry Ottaway to score.

But minutes before the break, Mark Kirby conceded possession near the halfway line and the impressive Billy Jones ran through to equalise.

Wynter however scored his first competitive goal since last December as he beat the offside trap, took the ball round May and walked the ball into the back of the net.

Town’s attacking intent continued after into the second half as after 56 minutes, Ottaway, continued to chase everything and caused all sorts of problems for the home back line.

There was more to come in terms of vibrating woodwork when Tony Mendy, newly acquired from Chalfont St Peter, came on for Ottaway just before the hour mark and immediately unleashed an unerring early drive.

But Wynter was on hand to extend Town’s lead when the ball was eventually played back into the penalty area a few moments later.

The game was thrown back into the balance ten minutes from time when Mickey Parcell was adjudged to have brought down Jones inside the Town penalty area by referee Paul Forrester.

Jones took the spot kick himself, and netted with confidence to make it his second of the game.

However after Joe Kizzi was judged to have fouled Campbell in the area, Wynter killed off the game from the penalty spot and they will now face AFC Hornchurch on Tuesday, October 25.

Elsewhere, the club announced former skipper Stan Muguo had been released after he played his last game in a Town shirt on August 16 in their 2-1 defeat at Dulwich Hamley.

Muguo made a total of 97 competitive appearances and scored three goals and the club thanked him for his service and wish him all the best for the future.

Town are set to face Staines Town tomorrow kicking off at 7:45pm before facing Hendon on Saturday, September 24 with a 3pm kick off.
